Senators Edward Markey (a Democrat) and Orrin Hatch (a Republican) introduced the “Protecting Student Privacy Act,” which would, among other things, prohibit the use of personally identifiable student information for advertising and marketing purposes, minimize the amount of data given to private companies, and limit companies’ ability to build and maintain permanent profiles of students.
