For eight years, Joel Klein has led the New York City public schools. In a new New York Times interview, he reflects on that period and on his decision to move forward to new challenges.
Q: Was it a hard decision [to leave]?
A: Of course it's tough. This is a place that I love, and the people I work with I love. I really did think it was the right time for me. I'm so captured by the possibilities of what we can do in technology. There is tremendous work to be done in the private-sector market. It seemed to be time to take on an opportunity for a company that has the breadth and depth and capacity to do it in a serious way. That's going to be a big part of the solution for K-12 education.
