Edward L. Glaeser, a Harvard economics professor, presents today on the New York Times Economix blog some ways in which Republicans in Washington might improve education. Alas, his ideas are not new. Push for merit pay and shorter vacations for teachers, he advises, and emphasize private education providers. What's more, some of his counsel is simply so vapid as to be absurd: ?Republicans should focus on strengthening education at the top and bottom of the income distribution and everywhere in between.? Not the most enlightening stuff.
