There were a number of education-related ballot initiatives that either?survived or went down in defeat?yesterday (not many survivors, actually). A few are described below and Education Week did a roundup story.
*In Florida, there weren't enough votes to pass a constitutional amendment that would have loosened the state's class-size limits and allowed schools more flexibility in this area. The measure reportedly secured 54 percent support, but needed 60 percent.
*Oklahomans defeated a constitutional amendment that would have increased public school funding there by requiring the state to match the average per-student spending of surrounding states.
*In Colorado, voters?rejected three related measures that would have restricted the state's ability to collect revenue for a variety of services, including education.
*On the local level, Seattle passed a public schools levy aimed at helping to offset future cuts, support a recently-approved teachers contract and provide new textbooks. It's a three-year, $48.2 million levy.
