- The chair of the Senate Education Committee on Friday gave Gongwer a preview of his priorities for the upcoming lame duck legislative session. He is mainly interested in what he calls “corrections and revisions to previously passed legislation” rather than new bills. One thing he’s particularly keen on tackling is the state’s new-ish Afterschool Childhood Enrichment (ACE) accounts, which appear to be “cumbersome” for families to access, a fact which has depressed participation. He is hoping to enact some tweaks to get more families into the program while maintaining as many guardrails as possible. Here’s hoping that balance can be achieved. (Gongwer Ohio, 10/28/22)
- Also on Friday, the first of several meetings around the state was convened to discuss ways to improve Ohio’s teacher pipeline. It was held at Miami University and included “dozens of area K-12 school officials” as well as “leaders from Miami University, Xavier University, Cincinnati State Technical and Community College as well as local business executives”. Governor DeWine addressed the group by video. This coverage makes it sound like mostly rah-rah and table setting, but I imagine there was more to it than that. (Dayton Daily News, 10/29/22)
