- “I’m not sure Jesus and his 12 apostles (could do the job) right now.” That was the blunt assessment of the former transportation director for Dayton City Schools last week. When you read all the horrific inside details of how the first months of school have gone, transportation-wise, in the district, you will no doubt agree with him. Worse yet, Superintendent Elizabeth Lolli said at the same time that the entire busing system is in the process of being revamped again, with a new launch coming in the next few weeks. Yowza. (Although, really, what other choice is there?) Intriguingly, the same third party who is this year responsible for charter and private school student busing is also being called up on to fix the district’s myriad issues too. (Dayton Daily News, 10/1/21)
- A smidge of good news: A regional workforce development plan covering six counties in northern Ohio includes charter and private schools along with traditional districts in its efforts to build education-to-work pipelines in a number of in-demand industries. Yay! (TiffinOhio.net, 10/1/21)
- Officials from Akron City Schools seem pretty jazzed about the $1.8 million grant they received to boost the GEAR UP college prep program in the district. You can read the piece to see what they think they are going to accomplish with the money, but I’ve seen this movie already (see here) and it’s pretty meh. (News 5, Cleveland, 10/1/21)
