- We start the week with a personal column in the Marion Times written by a dad who also happens to be a member of the paper’s editorial board. Editor Dad is trying to make the argument that school report cards reflect only the relative affluence of the families in a given district. There are some logical leaps there, in my opinion, which undermine his point. Take a look and see if you find some too. (Marion Star, 10/6/19)
- The Lorain branch of the NAACP held a community meeting this past weekend to discuss what more could be done to bring folks together to help the students served by Lorain City Schools. District CEO David Hardy had some zingy suggestions, all of them aimed at improving the behavior and commitment of the relevant adults in the system first. You know who I mean. (The Morning Journal, 10/6/19)
- From the Money is No Object File: School districts across Mahoning and Trumbull counties have been boosting their per-day pay rates for substitute teachers in order to keep an adult in front of their students every day. Very few of the district officials quoted in the piece would come out and say just how often they need to avail themselves of subs, but one district spent nearly $400K on subs last year at $80 per day. Do the math. But oddly, many of those same districts are also using attendance bonuses to try and entice their actual teachers to show up more often. Something doesn’t add up for me. (The Tribune-Chronicle 10/6/19)
