- In case you missed it while you were busy finalizing your costume for Halloween, Governor DeWine appointed two new state school board members late in the day on Friday. (Columbus Dispatch, 10/29/21)
- Meanwhile, parents of two homeschooled students in a Toledo suburb are trying to figure out how they received detailed report cards for their kids from Toledo City Schools, where they do not live and have never attended. Take a look and see if you buy the district’s explanation as described in this piece. I, for one, have some questions. (13 ABC News, Toledo, 10/28/21)
- In an effort to boost equity and diversity in its student body, Akron City Schools’ arts-focused middle school is changing the way rising fourth graders apply. Instead of the traditional audition, which officials say favors students with money for private dance or painting lessons, a workshop will now be held for all interested students to see what aptitudes they show while working with teachers for a couple of hours. I will refrain from commenting on this particular change in process, but will suggest that the district ought to perhaps try providing transportation for enrolled students if they really care about widening access that program. Personal transportation to and from school every day is pretty costly too, isn’t it? (Akron Beacon Journal, 11/1/21)
