- An op-ed in the Dispatch goes the history lesson route to explain the argument that the budget language that moved K-12 governance from the state board to the Executive Branch was not allowed and should ultimately be struck down. (Columbus Dispatch, 11/17/23) Personally, I think that if those political forebears of ours read this coverage of the most recent meeting of our still fully extant (and still fully ridiculous) state board of education, they would likely say, “Nah, you’re good. It’s better this way.” (Ohio Capital Journal, 11/15/23)
- Two more school districts have closed for the full day of the solar eclipse on April 8. “There are many unknowns on how the eclipse may affect communication, such as radios, cell phones and much more,” explained Ashtabula Area City Schools’ supe in his closure announcement this week. According to GreatAmericanEclipse.com, the area will see just under four minutes of totality that day. Science, dear subscribers. Science. (Ashtabula Star Beacon, 11/15/23)
- Here’s a nice story to end the week after the foregoing bummers: A group of Scott High School students with perfect attendance so far this year were treated to an early Thanksgiving lunch at the posh Toledo Country Club. 80 students (out of 700) earned that honor, but only 30 could spare the time to leave school to dine (even with a pass). The other hard workers got food trucks on campus, which is also lovely. One assumes the dude at the club with the 4.7 GPA was also really busy, but far enough ahead that he decided to spare an hour for turkey with all the fixings. Kudos to all! (Toledo Blade, 11/16/23)
