- We first noted this…unusual story last Friday, and simply alluded to it in the Bites because it seemed fanciful at the time. Fast forward to today—Friday the 13th—and this pronouncement from the editorial board of the Chronicle Telegram means that we probably need to take it seriously. Or, at least as seriously as we ever do around here. There is a solar eclipse coming on April 8, 2024. The best place in Ohio to observe it will, apparently, be Avon Lake. At around 2:00 pm, for about four minutes. Thus, school districts IN THE ENTIRE COUNTY are being exhorted to close their doors FOR THE WHOLE DAY. Not for educational purposes, the editors make clear in their full-throated support for the shutdown, but to avoid the possibility of a traffic jam that could “trap” kids on buses or prevent parents from picking kids up. I gotta say, it feels like a manageable situation for traffic-control types, especially with this much notice. (Chronicle Telegram, 1/13/23)
