- Where the heck are the education news stories these days? Only one to cover today, but at least it’s pretty interesting. As we discussed a couple of weeks ago, North Olmsted City Schools has faced 15 years of declining student enrollment, leading to buildings that have been operating way under capacity for years. Finally, after a decade and a half, the elected school board voted this week to close two of those buildings and to “rebalance” attendance zones accordingly. You would think this would be good news for the district’s bottom line; you would be wrong. Despite the move saving "an estimated $800,000 annually", an ocean of red ink is still projected in less than two years. One culprit: all the buildings remaining open, which are apparently so super janky they will require $60 million (!?) in repairs. Thus, district residents can expect bond and operating levy issues on the ballot no later than May. (Cleveland.com 12/1/21)
