School’s out. What? Y’all expected me to clip that for you? Not a chance.
- A bipartisan group of Ohio legislators held a press conference earlier this week in which they unveiled forthcoming legislation aimed at eliminating for-profit charter school operators in the state. Our own Chad Aldis had some pragmatic thoughts on this when asked about it by Gongwer. (Gongwer Ohio, 3/11/20) The legislation, if passed, would affect 178 schools in Ohio whose operators would all “have to switch to a nonprofit or close”. (Columbus Dispatch, 3/11/20)
- Like many of the stories we discuss here in the Bites (including the one above), the import of this next story is a matter of perspective. Where you might see a future felon, I might see free college in the future for Bellefontaine High School grads. (Peak of Ohio, no that’s really the news outlet’s name every day, 3/10/20)
- Toledo City Schools’ Early College High School is going to get fancy, and advantageously-located, new digs on the University of Toledo’s campus. Congrats to the Fightin’ Poindexters of Frogtown! However, I suspect that construction progress may have slowed a bit since this piece was published on Wednesday. (Toledo Blade, 3/11/20)
- Finally this week, Lorain City Schools’ administrators union (obviously that’s a thing) honcho Tim Jama said earlier this week that he was “satisfied” with the way interim “CEO” (What? It’s called satire; look it up!) Greg Ring cut the administrative positions created by former CEO David Hardy. This should be labeled “no duh” news, I think. Elaborating, “Boss” Jama said he was sad to have a lower number of members ultimately. (Seriously, Hardy’s people joined your union?!) But he was pleased that those let go would have a chance to apply for the fewer, newly created administrative positions coming up. And that those new positions were “more traditional”, as previously reported, by which it means only open to folks with specific backgrounds and licenses. Although “Comrade” Jama (still satire!) did not actually elaborate on that last point out loud. I think it was implied. (Elyria Chronicle, 3/11/20)
