- Here is further coverage of Governor DeWine’s efforts to eliminate discredited reading curricula and to make sure that the science of reading is the law of the land. This brief piece covers the full gamut of three possible responses as I see them: There’s the regret camp (“Some of our teachers feel guilty and they feel they let students down”), the mistakes were made camp (“There are too many kids across the country who did not learn to read the proper way… If we don’t make a difference early on, this struggle gets bigger and bigger.”), and the denier camp (“Intuitively, I think some teachers thought this cueing method might make sense and this might be the best way to do it.”). The latter is more tepid here than in some other pieces and let’s all hope that’s a rising trend. (News5 Cleveland, 3/15/23)
- Staying in northeast Ohio for a moment: Here’s a great piece from Cleveland on tech worker credentialing that not only explains how you can go from no training to a paid apprenticeship in less than 16 weeks (sometimes way less, depending on the area) but also why it’s likely a better choice for many folks than is a two- or four-year degree path. All told from the perspective of someone who knows—really knows—the whole deal and is working hard to school others. (The Land, 3/15/23)
- Finally this week: Like the buzzards returning to Hinckley (look it up, kids), it’s once again time for the annual restart of the We All Know Vouchers Totally Suck, But How Much Do They Suck? lecture tour around Ohio. Let the haters count the ways for you. (BG Independent News, 3/16/23)
