- In case you missed it yesterday, Fordham, in partnership with NCTQ, released a new report looking at the state of Ohio’s teacher preparation programs. Specifically, how well those programs prepared future teachers to teach reading. Here is a great overview of the report from Patrick O’Donnell published in The 74, with the promise of more analysis to come—including responses from some of the colleges and universities whose programs did not come out looking so great. - Here is a brief little explainer about school choice options in Ohio, both as they are now and how they might change if the so-called “backpack funding bill” becomes law. Personally, I think they read like an advertisement for reasons parents might want to avail themselves of a school other than the district in which they live (and indeed to support expansion of options). - It’s been a minute since we covered a story related to Pete “Weed Guy” Kadens and his education-based philanthropical work in Toledo. Well, wait no more. However, it looks like dude’s “seed money” (if you will) is no longer flowing and Toledo City Council will have to continue to kick in annually to keep HOPE Toledo’s pre-K program going. We are promised some quality data from program providers ahead of a final decision on spending that green, but it sure sounds like everyone’s cool with dropping the next mill with or without that data. And indeed no matter what it might say when it arrives. If I may be blunt about it. (Toledo Blade, 5/14/23)
