- The good news: a blog post by Fordham’s own Jessica Poiner is quoted in this piece. The bad news: this piece is about delineating winners and losers in the divvying up of federal coronavirus recovery funds to schools in Ohio. The worst news: it’s mostly about systems and very little about actual kids and families. The piece, that is, not Jessica’s blog. (The 74, 6/8/20)
- Money is also the overwhelming focus of the Dayton Daily News’ look at the new education bill proposed by Senator Matt Huffman. With a side order of staff furloughs. Which are also about money. (Dayton Daily News, 6/8/20)
- Once the bill was introduced and sponsor Huffman got to testify yesterday, Gongwer says that the furlough discussion—that is, a provision allowing school districts to temporarily lay off workers rather than needing to fire them outright—received the most attention. Gee, I would have thought some of those accountability provisions might have drawn some solid questions too. But this is politics; what do I know? (Gongwer Ohio, 6/9/20)
- That same dichotomy seems to exist in this coverage of yesterday’s state board of education meeting. Lots of huge unanswered questions regarding restarting schools in the fall—how, when, in what matter, etc.—are mentioned at the top, but the coverage devolves into discussion of the furlough question pretty quickly and firmly. At issue, it seems, is who is for the idea and who is not. More to come on this, I’m sure. (Dayton Daily News, 6/9/20)
