- In a surprise to no one, the state board of education on Monday returned former interim state superintendent Stephanie Siddens to that post until a permanent incumbent can be found. The vote was unanimous, which might have been perhaps a tiny bit of a surprise to some of us. (Gongwer Ohio, 6/13/22) Yesterday, board members took a look at a plethora of data from the 2021-2022 school year. As we noted here when clipping that specific report last Friday, there are some signs of positive movement in the ELA testing data. Additional positivity was noted around public school enrollment numbers. “But we're nowhere near back to where we were at pre-pandemic levels,” said ODE’s chief program officer. Some serious negativity was reported in Kindergarten readiness scores this past year. Persistently large performance gaps between Black students, English learners, and students with disabilities and their peers were also cited in the discussion. I, personally, am still wondering just how bad the math score data must be. (Gongwer Ohio, 6/14/22)
- The elected board of Canton City Schools voted this week to spend $11 million in federal Covid relief funds on two new gymnasiums and what sounds like the fanciest bus garage ever conceived. (Canton Repository, 6/13/22)
- And since so many of our clips recently have been bad/negative/snarky, let’s end today with an unequivocally good news story. Toledo City Schools’ summer manufacturing camp sounds completely awesome. So happy to see that it is back after two Covid-interrupted years. (Toledo Blade, 6/14/22)
