- We start today in Fordham’s birthplace of Dayton, which as you will recall, may be facing a summer of strife over teacher contract negotiations or lack thereof. Jeremy Kelley this week dug deep into the state of play in the stalled negotiations and tried to discover what is at issue. First up, the state of play is probably best described as “deadlocked” upon the halting of discussions between the two sides for all of June and July. Union reps say “pressure may be needed” to restart those negotiations, even in August. I’m thinking triple dog dare. (Dayton Daily News, 6/7/17) Then Jeremy tried to suss out the answer to the question, “What’s really going on?” That is, what issues remain and where do the two sides stand. I’m not sure he was entirely successful, but it sounds like his interview subjects are keeping their cards close to their vests for the time being. Gonna be a long summer, methinks. - Staying in Dayton for a moment, here’s some rah rah on the city’s Preschool Promise program. Which, as you’ll recall, is copiously funded but seriously lagging in sign-ups so far. Wonder how a massive teachers strike will affect those outreach efforts? Inquiring minds want to know! (Dayton Daily News, 6/9/17)
- The agenda for the next state board of education meeting got a little more interesting this week, thanks to a judicial panel’s ruling in regard to the ongoing kerfuffle between Ohio’s largest online school and the department of education. (Columbus Dispatch, 6/7/17)
- We close today with a bit more information about that fantastic-sounding summer school program in Youngstown City Schools profiled earlier this week. What could be better than free catch-up and advancement classes, sports, arts, food, and summer camp activities, you ask? How about adaptable transportation to and from said program that actually responds to kids’ specific schedules and is schedulable via app and free to district families? I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that this kind of project is exactly the reason that Y’town hired its award-winning CIO and its “my blood runs yellow” transportation guru. Kudos to all.
