- Back in April, we talked about the new Math Corps program coming to Toledo this summer, especially highlighting the ambitious promises (“proven track record of success”) made by its leader for student achievement. (I don’t think I’m off base with this skepticism since the program has been operating in Detroit for nearly 30 years and that city is not, to my knowledge, a regularly-cited example of top math scores.) Anywho, here’s an update on Toledo’s Math Corps after just a few days into their summer offering. Two red flags for me in here: Multiple references to “it’s about more than just math” and the fact that the boss calls the actual math learning (with homework and quizzes to test comprehension) the “broccoli” portion of the day. And we wonder why students regularly shun it. On the upside, UT student and camp teacher Cyrus Koogan’s love of math comes through loud and clear. Thank heavens. A good camp is all about the counselors, in my experience. (Toledo Blade, 7/13/22)
- Well that escalated quickly. Staying in northwest Ohio, private school parents in suburban Sylvania are extremely unhappy with the district’s transportation plan for their kids come the fall. The district is citing driver shortages for the necessary combining of elementary and high school students on buses and the multiple stops/hubs being required. However this beef has been playing out between parents and district since the plan’s announcement in April, sounds like it could turn to litigation as the start of the school year looms.
