- Fordham’s data guru Aaron Churchill was quoted in this piece looking at the changes ahead for school and district report cards as a result of the recent passage of HB 82. (Center Square, 7/2/21)
- Meanwhile, Aaron’s boss Chad Aldis was quoted in this piece soliciting a range of responses to the education provisions included in the state budget bill. While some folks are all about their Benjamins—and no one else’s—Chad says, “The legislature soundly rejected the false choice that Ohio needs to choose between supporting public education and empowering families with educational options.” Nice. (Columbus Dispatch, 7/3/21) Meanwhile meanwhile, this commentary from the Ohio Capital Journal seems to be making some big swings in regard to what school funding reform—specifically, more Benjamins—could mean for student achievement. (Ohio Capital Journal, 7/6/21)
- And speaking of money (when aren’t we doing that, I ask you?), here’s a real world piece that ties up all the foregoing into a neat (but kinda ugly) little bow. Stark County’s Department of Job and Family Services is giving away federal Covid-relief dollars in the form of school clothing allowances for area families. Just one little hitch: Students who are homeschooled or attending an online school are ineligible for the assistance. Like they’re just hanging around the house in bathing suits all day? And it’s possible that private school students might be excluded as well the way the story is worded. Come on guys, is this support for needy families or a handout to Target? Pretty reprehensible if you ask me. (Canton Repository, 7/6/21)
