- On Monday, we had an odd story suggesting that private schools operating “inside churches” were somehow a new thing. Today, we have a piece that twists itself into knots to propose that Latin, phonics, classical virtues, Shakespeare, Aristotelian philosophy, and the like—all proposed as part of the curriculum of one private and one charter school planned to open in Columbus next year—are also new. Luckily for us all, there is no public entity that will force families who don’t want this type of “novel” education to go to these schools. (Columbus Dispatch, 8/17/22)
- How did busing work out for the charter and private school students in Lorain on Monday and Tuesday? Only those families know because no one at the MJ gives a crap. Good news, though: The new vendor was all ready to go for district families this morning and the $2.5 million of extra buses the district bought are also sitting around ready to be pressed into service if they are needed. By the district. For district kids. (Morning Journal, 8/15/22)
- Lots of shameful findings in the performance review of Ohio’s College Credit Plus program, released by the state auditor’s office yesterday, if you ask me. You can read up and nominate your own, but for my money the nadir is the fact that the largest district in the state—the one with the largest number of postsecondary institutions in and around it too—ranked 562 out of 602 districts for credit hours earned per student. Can you figure out how that could be? I sure have an idea. (Columbus Dispatch, 8/16/22)
