- Kudos to the Springfield News-Sun for checking up on the report cards received by the two charter schools in Clark County. Both were pretty bad, meaning that families in the area have very few decent options available (recall that Springfield City Schools fell from a D to an F overall this year). It’s not reported here, but even the independent STEM school fared poorly this year. How disheartening. Vouchers, anyone? (Springfield News-Sun, 9/21/19).
- Kudos to Horizon Science Academy in Youngstown for its overall B grade this year, the best charter school report card in the Trumbull/Mahoning County area. There were a couple of Cs and the rest of the schools were Ds and Fs. Hugely problematic for families with a dearth of options in this area as well. Two things stand out to me in these pieces: a) The charter school leaders quoted do not attempt to denigrate the report cards or what they represent. None of that “we refused to let this grade define us” malarkey. Quite the opposite, in fact. b) Charter schools in Ohio now face a three-consecutive-Fs-and-you’re-closed rule. I didn’t hear anyone even suggesting a change to that system, let alone any folks demanding before the legislature that it be changed. Make of that what you will. (Vindy.com, 9/23/19)
- Dawson Vandervort wants your vote…if you live in the Vandalia-Butler school district, that is. The college junior at the University of Dayton is running for school board in his hometown, not far from campus. I don’t know what his chances are, but his reason for running is solid enough: The district’s most recent overall report card rating was a C. But for university student Vandervort, he was even more troubled by the college readiness component grade in Vandalia: a D. Good luck, dude! (Flyer News, 9/20/19)
