- Our own Chad Aldis is quoted in this primer on the new graduation requirements in place for this year’s high school freshmen. While Chad and the one freshman quoted here are all cool with it, the high school teacher quoted still seems a little skeptical to me. (Ohio Public Radio, via WCBE-FM Columbus, 8/30/19)
- A lengthy and fascinating discussion of interdistrict open enrollment here, featuring several Stark County school districts. And even a parent! Fordham’s 2017 report on OE is also referenced. Of interest: The district officials quoted are mostly looking at OE as a money in/money out proposition, although that could have to do with the questions asked of them. Some of those officials do provide an interesting look at the reasons why families opt in or out (but mostly in). It is nice to know that they actually know why. Additionally, the list of districts which don’t participate in OE is fascinating. Some are predictable; some definitely are not. (Canton Repository, 8/31/19)
- Charter schools are leading the way in teacher diversity among Montgomery County schools it seems, according to this report from the Dayton Daily News. I assume officials in those charters were too busy doing their work to sit down for an interview on the topic. Personally, I would much rather have heard from them than from some of the district officials who were quoted. (Dayton Daily News, 9/2/19)Everything is awesome during opening week at Summit Academy in Parma after its teachers conducted the first ever charter school teachers strike in Ohio earlier this year. The teachers are reported to be happy, optimistic, and hopeful after what definitely appears to be a win. If the data in the paper are to be believed, that win includes a student/teacher ratio of about 4 to 1. What’s not to like? (Cleveland.com, 9/2/19)
