Measuring impact
The 74 this week published an important look at the Active Ingredients project, an effort launched in 2017 aimed at helping charter schools develop systems for measuring and reporting the success of student supports such as wraparound services, community partnerships, and service projects in driving meaningful student learning. The Thomas B. Fordham Foundation is among the nationwide group of authorizers participating.
Creating a tradition
Fordham-authorized KIPP Columbus was profiled in the Columbus Dispatch recently. The piece looked at the school’s football program—a rarity among charters—and larger efforts to build a sports tradition where none had previously existed.
Ending virtual bullying
Ohio Virtual Academy teacher Brittany Melden knows what it’s like for students who experience bullying in their brick-and-mortar schools. When she saw concerning behavior among some of her e-school students, she utilized all of the skills she gained from her own experiences to create a more cooperative and supportive environment for her own students. Kudos!
Covid quarantine changes
Based on a successful pilot effort in a number of schools across the state, Ohio this week made changes to its Covid-exposure quarantine guidance for students and staff. The so-called “Mask to Stay; Test to Play” plan aims to keep more students and teachers in their classroom and learning while maintaining pandemic safety for all.
Trying again
Ohio House Bill 467 was introduced in the General Assembly this week by House Education Chair Manning and Representative Crossman. It’s another attempt to prohibit charter schools from using for-profit operators. Our guess is that hearings will likely commence fairly soon.
