Coming soon: school buildings for sale
The board of education of Columbus City Schools voted to put five additional surplus school buildings up for sale soon. The Dispatch coverage noted prominently that charter schools would have right of first refusal to purchase them.
The view from the editorial board room
The following day, Dispatch editors opined in favor of the school board’s action. They were not only supportive of the “right-sizing” efforts but also of the possibility that great charter schools could soon be utilizing these buildings.
Not all the news can be good news
The Plain Dealer this week took a look at what has been termed a “loophole” in Ohio’s new system of bonus funding for quality charter schools. It relates to charter operators with quality schools located outside of Ohio and to how much funding, if any, those schools should entitle the operator. The call to action for legislators to deal with the loophole was loud.
