TSA is a bright part of Toledo’s future
While celebrating the history of their venerable building (former Jeep plant, former Owens-Illinois plant), Toledo School for the Arts leaders were looking ahead to a planned new expansion that could allow up to 140 additional students per year. Great news for a school in high demand.
Bright spot for NAEP results among charter students in Cleveland
The Bluegrass Institute was among the many groups digging into NAEP test results over the last week. And the Kentucky organization found a very specific and important bright spot among the data: Black students in Cleveland charter schools significantly outperformed their traditional public school peers in both math and English. Nice!
Strong investment opportunity
The managing director for the Charter School Facility Center at NAPCS published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal this week extolling the virtues of charter schools as an investment opportunity. This is especially true, he says, for so-called “impact investors”—those who want to build up a social good while getting a good return on their investment.
Changing the negative narratives
The Center for Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) hopes to build on great charter school stories like the foregoing in order to change the narrative around charters to emphasize the positive track record accrued by hard work across the sector over the last 30 years. Their opening salvo in this effort consists of two blogs and two research reports, released earlier this week.
On-the-ground realities
Just because school districts are required to provide transportation for charter students doesn’t mean they can do it right. A Columbus parent had to pull her child out of her charter school after repeated and egregious-sounding difficulties with district-provided transportation made successful attendance nearly impossible.
