An Ohio-focused, in-depth piece in the Washington Post this week described a troubling web of relationships between sponsors, charter operators, and charter-affiliated for-profit real estate companies. It’s all very disheartening. Here’s hoping there’s more to the story than presented in the Post.
More choice for rural students
A former Ohioan, now the dean of students at a charter school in Idaho, opined in the Idaho Statesman this week, about the lack of school choice options for rural students. Not only in the Gem State, but across the country. “One school in a community does not ensure that students have the option to find a school that is the best fit for them,” he writes. “More needs to be done to get school choice options into our rural communities.”
Listening to the students
American University Radio this week features an interview with Alex O’Sullivan, a charter school student in Washington, DC, who has recently concluded his term as student representative on the State Board of Education in the district. He discusses his own pandemic-disrupted education journey, his time on the board, and what he feels the city could do better to serve its public school students.
Celebration time
National School Choice Week begins Sunday and celebrations will be numerous across the country. Andrew Campanella, president of NSCW, kicks things off with an op ed in the Warwick (RI) Beacon, in which he reminds us all “how wonderful it is that kids have different talents” and that “the different learning environments that inspire them” should be the focus of our celebrations next week.
Speaker series to aid teacher effectiveness and wellbeing
The EdWisely Speaker Series 2021-2022 continues with a number of upcoming virtual events focused on educator efficacy and wellbeing.
