Let Ohio’s budget debate commence!
Governor DeWine gave his State of the State speech earlier this week, laying out a long list of education-related provisions he will include in his biennial budget proposal. Included among them: A huge boost to the quality charter school fund and a doubling of the per-pupil facility allowance for brick-and-mortar charters. We’ll be keeping an eye on these and other issues for you as budget season proceeds.
The view from New York
Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul this week proposed lifting the statutory cap on the number of charter schools in the Empire State. If that seems like a somewhat surprising move, rest assured that the New York Times says, unsurprisingly, that she’ll have a “tough fight” to get that done.
Digging deeper into school funding
Fordham continued its blog series on school funding in the Buckeye State this week. Aaron Churchill looked at the current base cost model of funding in the state, including recommendations to eliminate some new problems created when the Cupp-Patterson funding plan was adopted.
The view from South Carolina
While the information provided is mostly anecdotal, charter supporters testifying before a legislative subcommittee in South Carolina this week provided compelling stories of how their schools are drawing new students and new teachers while traditional district schools are experiencing the opposite.
The view from Frogtown
Student enrollment has been climbing steadily at Northwest Ohio Classical Academy in Toledo. The school completed a renovation of its space to make more room just before the start of this school year. By next fall, they will have a brand new building with room for even more students and more academic and extracurricular programming as well.
