Why we all fight for charters and choice
Kendall Massett, executive director of the Delaware Charter Schools Network, published an op-ed in a recent edition of Delaware Today in which she lays out the reasons why she fights for stronger charters and more school choice. She focuses on the needs of families and students as well as the dedicated teachers and administrators working to serve those needs in schools across the state. She concludes simply and clearly: “Charter schools are the answer that many parents and students seek.”
Funding for charter facilities
In Florida this week, a bill to give charter schools access to $10 million in state money to finance school facilities passed out of the state’s Senate Education Committee. Interestingly, the plan is meant to leverage additional philanthropic support for new and independent startup charters across the Sunshine State. A companion bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives; it awaits a hearing.
More from Florida
Previously-approved funding, part of Governor DeSantis’ “Building Florida’s Future” initiative, is being used to help five community colleges across the state start their own charter schools. The plan is to streamline the high school to postsecondary education to job market pathway for young people. The first two schools—at Tallahassee Community College and at Santa Fe College in Gainesville—should open this fall.
Back in Ohio
Students at Horizon Science Academy in Lorain, meanwhile, are raising money in hopes of holding the charter school’s first ever senior prom.
