More fallout from CSP proposals
Charter supporters have been raising more alarms regarding the new Charter School Program (CSP) funding rules proposed by the Biden administration. Fordham Institute president Mike Petrilli answered questions about the new rules in an interview with reimaginED this week. Among his many concerns was the chilling effect that the “community impact analysis” provisions would have on charter startups, replications, and expansions. The editorial board of the Wall Street Journal was even more direct, calling the federal effort “charter school sabotage”.
More concerns
Charter advocates are also casting a wary eye at the Biden administration’s new budget proposal released this week. Among other concerns, NAPCS CEO Nina Rees called attention to flat funding for the start-up, growth, and replication of high-quality charter schools in a Chalkbeat analysis.
The view from Iowa
The town of Hamburg, Iowa, has been without a high school of its own since a devastating flood in 2015. This week, it was announced that a charter high school will open in the fall. Specifically, a career-focused program that will have students out working in the community three days a week in addition to their classroom studies. Congratulations!
Ohio vs Michigan
Proud Buckeye and former voucher recipient Walter Blanks, Jr. published an op-ed in the Detroit News this week extolling the virtues of his home state’s school choice infrastructure. While the state-versus-state framing was a bit of theater, if it spurs That State Up North to boost its charter and voucher offerings in the spirit of competition, then who are we to quibble?
