Ohio’s next state superintendent
The state board of education announced its list of seven finalists to be the next state superintendent of public instruction. All seven will be interviewed early next week as part of the monthly board meeting.
Hero
Students at the Academy for Urban Scholars in Columbus call Dayatra Hales “Coach”. Not because of sports but because she is a mentor to many of them. Now they can call her “Hero”, too. Hales was named a “Classroom Hero” by a local media outlet looking to highlight the important work of educators across the city. Kudos!
A new perspective
In a profile published this week, Detroit Public Schools superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti said, among other things, that he has softened his approach to charter schools during his five year tenure as head of the district. He acknowledged that he was pulled into existing political debates about them when he first arrived but now believes that good charters can and should coexist with district schools.
Poll numbers
SocialSphere and Murmuration released new polling data this week which found strong support for school choice generally, along with an interesting generational gap among left-leaning respondents. Lots of important data here for you to check out.
Nearly full
West Virginia Academy in Morgantown, poised to be the first brick-and-mortar charter to school to open in the state, accepted 350 applicants into its inaugural class, leaving just a few available slots in each grade level. It’s a long time between now and August, but that level of interest from families will hopefully be hard for charter foes in the Mountain State to deny.
More reaction against federal charter proposals
Last week it was the Wall Street Journal, this week the Washington Post’s editorial board weighed in on federal Charter School Program proposals, calling the new rules a “sneak attack” on charters.
