We’re back from vacation, covering pieces from 4/30 – 5/13.
Celebrating National Charter Schools Week in Ohio
First and foremost this issue: Happy National Charter Schools Week! Governor Mike DeWine and Lt. Governor Jon Husted issued a joint proclamation recognizing the event across the Buckeye State.
More to celebrate
Kudos to Ohio’s Tonya Kelly, announced as a 2022 Changemakers honoree by NAPCS. Ms. Kelly is founder of the Empower Our Youth Foundation and a teacher at Horizon Science Academy’s elementary school in Columbus. Congratulations and thanks to her and all of the honorees working so hard for charter school students throughout the country.
Community development
Here’s a great look at a small Toledo nonprofit working to revitalize the Old South End, including assistance with building improvements at a charter school located in and serving families in the neighborhood.
Focus on Toledo School for the Arts
Speaking of charter schools in the Glass City, the Toledo Blade featured no fewer than three pieces about the school over the last week. First up: A celebratory groundbreaking for a huge expansion that will include student-focused and community-facing new spaces. Second: A laudatory editorial calling the school “a community gem”. Third: A note that the school’s leader will be moving on later this year, setting the stage for a new era for TSA.
Our new state superintendent
On Tuesday this week, the Ohio board of education voted to select Steve Dackin as the next state superintendent of public instruction. Fordham Institute vice president of Ohio policy Chad L. Aldis lauded Dackin as “a proven leader” who has “recognized the importance of empowering parents with high-quality education options.”
