“A lot of people have strong opinions on both sides.”
California governor Gavin Newsome this week announced that a deal had been reached to enact legislative changes to the Golden State’s charter school laws after many months of negotiations and very public airing of grievances on all sides. The latest version of Assembly Bill 1505 includes revisions to key aspects of the charter law: the approval and renewal of charter schools, the appeals process for charter denials, and the credentialing requirements for charter school teachers. The legislature faces a September 13 deadline for passing any remaining bills in the session.
A federal/local balance for charter school oversight?
Presidential candidate and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg recently sat down with Education Week’s Evie Blad for an interview on education topics. In it, Buttigieg answers vital questions such as “What do you see as the role of charter schools?” and “Do you think that the federal government should support them or play any more of a greater role in oversight?” A good read.
“A work of genius.”
Fordham Institute senior fellow Robert Pondiscio has a new book coming out – How the Other Half Learns, an in-depth look at a year in the life of New York City’s Success Academy charter schools. The first review of the book comes to us from the WaPo. Columnist Jay Mathews says that both fans and foes of Eva Moskowitz and her schools will find much to like in the book.
