National awards
Fifteen charter schools from California to Washington, D.C., and from Texas to Minnesota were named national Blue Ribbon Schools for 2022 by the U.S. Department of Education. You can see the whole list here. Huge congratulations!
Congratulations are also in order…
Toledo School for the Arts will be recognized by the national Arts School Network later this year as an “exemplary school” for its excellence in arts and academics. The network is a nonprofit association that provides support, networking, and resources for art education institutions. What’s more, TSA has been recognized by the network consistently for more than a decade. Huge kudos to the school’s staff, students, and families.
Ohio report cards
The Dayton Daily News took a look at the newly-released report cards of charter schools in the area, especially looking to compare them to Dayton City Schools. While the district’s perennial low performance is probably not the exemplar toward which folks should aspire, the DDN does give charters credit in the numerous places where it is due.
Aspiring upward in the Badger State
Here’s a great story of a charter school in Green Bay, Wisconsin, which opened its doors for the school year in a new location: on the grounds of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College. The 300 students of The Northeast Wisconsin School of Innovation not only have nice new digs, they also have new opportunities to access college-level work before and after their high school careers are completed.
Parents say…
A new parent survey conducted by Tryton Partners in collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation and Stand Together Trust explored how families continued to navigate traditional and alternative school models in the wake of pandemic disruptions. Coverage from The 74 highlights the 9 percent enrollment drop in traditional district schools and what this may mean for K-12 education moving forward. The full report, first of three to be released based on the survey data, can be found here.
